Photosynthesis is the process that produces organic molecules from simple inorganic molecules from the sun’s energy. In plants, photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts, organelles that are unique to plants. Chloroplasts contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight. The light energy is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is used to reduce carbon dioxide to make organic molecules such as glucose. The oxygen is released into the atmosphere.
